Profile
Tatsuya Shimono, Conductor
Permanent Conductor of NHK Symphony Orchestra since October 2023, Principal Guest Conductor of Sapporo Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra since April 2024.
Born in Kagoshima in 1969, Tatsuya Shimono cemented his international reputation as a conductor by winning the First Prize and the Hideo Saito Award at Tokyo International Music Competition for conducting in 2000 and the First Prize at the 47th Besançon International Competition in 2001. Since then he has guest conducted major orchestras such as Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Czech Philharmonic, Barcelona Symphony(OBC),Sinfonia Varsovia, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and NHK Symphony Orchestra among others.
Shimono served as Resident Conductor and then Principal Guest Conductor of Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra (2006-2017) ,guest conductor and then Principal Guest Conductor of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra (2014-2020) and general music director of Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra (2017-2024)
He is also holding the title of Music Director of Hiroshima Wind Orchestra since 2011.
In addition to his activity with orchestra he also regularly conducts Opera at New National Theatre Tokyo,Nissay Theatre and Nikikai Opera among others.
Dai Miyata, Cello
Dai MIYATA (宮田 大 in Japanese) was born in 1986 and started playing the cello at the age of three under his parents who were music masters. His splendid talent attracted a lot of attention of people and musicians surrounding him since his early childhood, and after 9 years old he won the first prizes in all the contests in which he participated including the 74th Music Competition of Japan. In 2009, Dai Miyata won the Grand Prix in the 9th Rostropovich Cello Competition, becoming the first Japanese competitor to win the grand prize in the world's most prestigious competition. He won first prize in all of the contests in which he has participated. His splendid performances have attracted a lot of attention of composers and co-performers, gaining high praise from the world-class conductor Seiji Ozawa. He has performed internationally as one of the leading cellists from Japan. Miyata graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève in Switzerland, and the Kronberg Academy in Germany. He has studied cello with Sumiko Kurata and Frans Helmerson. Miyata has been actively performing as a concerto soloist with various major orchestras around the world, including the Orchestras de Paris, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as major orchestra in Japan. His recording 'Elgar: Cello Concerto' in 2019 with Thomas Dausgaard conducting and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra won the 'OPUS KLASSIK 2021', one of the most prestigious awards in the European classical world, in the concerto category (cello). Miyata plays the 1698 Stradivarius cello known as "The Cholmondeley" lent by the Ueno Fine Chemicals Industry, Ltd. Artist Management & Label: NIPPON COLUMBIA CO.,LTD.
Japan Philharmonic Orchestra
JAPAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, one of the top Japanese orchestras based in Tokyo, is uniquely characterized as having a rare combination of artistic excellence and dedication to social responsibility. Since its foundation in 1956 the orchestra has learned to value making music with warm hearts and deep empathy through its history of survival. To spread the power of music to all people, generations and communities, JPO makes over 150 orchestra concerts yearly in Tokyo Metropolitan area and other regions of Japan, educational concerts and workshops, and small-sized performances for local and international communities.
